Robust emergency pull-wire switch for heavy duty applications

With the new ZS 91, steute is expanding its range of emergency pull-wire switches to include a series which has been developed especially for heavy duty applications. Its enclosure is made of fibreglass-reinforced plastic and can withstand very high levels of mechanical wear and tear. Its release lever makes handling easier, while its optimised construction – in combination with the latest manufacturing technology – permits realisation of protection classes up to IP 67.
The switching system permits simple standardised integration of the emergency pull-wire switch in safety circuits. The wire length can measure up to 2 x 50 m, meaning that even large hazardous areas can be fitted with a rapidly accessible emergency-stop function. Additional safety functions include integrated monitoring of the pull-wire itself, as well as potential tears in the wire. An emergency stop signal can be visualised using an optional warning lamp or yellow indicating lever.
The ZS 91 conforms to DIN EN 60947-5-5. It can be used to switch off conveyor systems safely, for example in the mining industry or recycling plants.
In addition to different switching systems with up to six contacts, series variants also include the heavy-duty position switch ES 91 DL and the belt-alignment switch ZS 91 SR. The ZS 91 SR is fitted with an adjustable lever which gauges the correct alignment of a conveyor belt. If the belt is not running centrally, it will be switched off or a warning signal will be transmitted to the control room. This means that longer periods of inactivity, which can result from a fully loaded, falsely aligned belt, can be avoided.

New radio standard for industrial applications with »energy harvesting« / longer-range radio position switches

The steute business field »Wireless« is continuing to expand the number of possible industrial applications for its innovative »energy harvesting« radio technology and will be presenting the latest developments at the Hanover Fair.
A few months ago we presented an electrodynamic energy generator which demonstrated a considerably longer lifespan (over a million switching cycles) and a far higher switching frequency (up to 1,800 switching cycles per hour) than previously available components. Now steute is introducing a new radio standard which, amongst other things, has the advantage of a longer-range wireless connection. This makes it possible to operate wireless switchgear at ranges of up to 700 m outdoors, without an energy supply. The radio protocol uses the 868 MHz waveband, or 915 MHz in the North American version. The 915 MHz version is certified in accordance with FCC and IC; CSA/UL certification is in preparation.
Users have the choice between two variants. In our self-sufficient devices, the device generates enough energy to facilitate not only transmission of the wireless protocol, but also receipt of a confirmation signal from the recipient. If this confirmation is not received, there is then even enough energy available to transmit a repeat telegram. In our battery-based wireless devices, the battery facilitates bidirectional communication. The reduced energy requirement of this low-power wireless technology means that, depending on the application, the battery lifetime can span several years. The required transmission certainty is thus guaranteed, even in sensitive applications.
steute will be presenting its first switching devices equipped with the new radio module - the RF 95 position switch series. These switches are position switches from our 95 series, available with two different ranges. With a stub antenna in a »shark fin« design, long-range (LR) applications up to 500 m are possible. Alternatively, an ultra-long-range (ULR) antenna is also available, permitting ranges of up to 800 m outdoors. The different variants (self-sufficient/battery-based and LR/ULR) can be combined at will. This means an expansion to the modular range of steute radio switchgear. And users can be sure that other types of wireless switchgear will also be available with the new radio standard in the future.

The new generation: standard position switches for extreme applications / versatile even in adverse and explosive environments

Wet, extreme temperatures and explosive zones: these are typical environments for the completely new ES/EM 98 standard position switch series from steute, which we shall be presenting at the Hanover fair.
Mounting dimensions in accordance with DIN EN 50041, our new position switches are very versatile. Their robust metal enclosures can withstand high levels of mechanical wear and tear. Depending on the wishes of the user and the sealing type, variants in protection classes IP 66, IP 67 and IP 69K are available. An enormous temperature range from -40°C to +90 °C increases the application potential for this new switchgear series even further.
Users can choose from a large selection of actuators, and the available switching inserts include a new, pressure-resistant variant with three contacts designed as a snap action contact with positive break NC contact. In the near future variants will also be available which have been reinforced to meet the requirements for gas and dust explosion protection (zones 1 and 2/ zones 21 and 22 according to ATEX guidelines) and correspondingly certified.
As a further, particularly innovative addition to the new range, steute has developed RF 98 wireless versions which work according to the »energy harvesting« principle and require neither cables not batteries. With these features the new series is suited to all manner of tasks in the automation industry – including and especially in areas with extreme ambient conditions.

At the SPS/ IPC/ DRIVES 2011 fair, the steute business field »Extreme« will be presenting several new emergency pull-wire switch series particularly suited as »extended emergency-stop switches« in large machines and systems.
The ZS 71 and ZS 80 »Extreme« series differ from the basic versions in that they have plastic rather than metal enclosures, as well as a particularly effective sealing concept. In addition, the pull-wire unit is made of stainless steel; the mounting screws are also stainless steel. These details betray the fact that our new products have been developed especially for use in corrosive environments. Classification in protection class IP 67, or IP 69K for the ZS 71, is proof that they continue to function perfectly and on a sustained basis even when impacted by a high-pressure cleaner. An integrated emergency-stop button on the ZS 80 makes it possible to arrest a hazardous movement directly at the switch.
The new ZS 91 is predestined for heavy-duty applications of all kinds. Its fibreglass-reinforced plastic enclosure can withstand even high mechanical wear and tear. Its lever release makes handling easier, and its optimised construction – in combination with state-of-the-art manufacturing – permits realisation of high protection classes up to IP 69K. The wire length of the ZS 91 can measure up to 2 x 100 m, so that even large hazardous areas (e.g. conveyor belts in the mining and recycling industries) can be equipped with an easily accessible emergency-stop function. Further safety functions include integrated pull-wire and wire-break monitoring. A belt alignment switch variant is also available.
